First Day, New Blog

Olivethebeach is off and running! This sudden inspiration to start a blog comes not from a New Year's resolution (because I don't do those), but from a burst of accomplishment in December. I finished my dear friend's baby quilt and a full size quilt for my sister that I had been working on, or not working on as it were, for three years. Quilting is a great creative outlet for me. I love touching fabric, reveling in the beautiful colors and designs, imagining each fabric's place in a quilt. When I quilt, I feel transported from the quotidian and find myself absorbed in the pattern and the sewing. And yet, I enjoy the rote behaviors in quilting: cutting, piecing, ironing, pinning. When I quilt, I feel content.

I hope to maintain my momentum and post my creations as they progress. My first quilt for the new year (2008!) will be a baby quilt for a silent auction our church will have in February to benefit one of our mission projects in Guatemala.

I'm ready to take the plunge now and work towards an Etsy store and take orders for custom quilts. I've been sewing since college and quilting for about 6 years. I also delve into other crafty delights: altering journals, making atc's, making scrapbooks for my family, card making, crocheting, and making small collages.

I love books and enjoy reading many different genres. I have just finished The Mermaid Chair. It was a good read and I enjoyed the idea that the main character worked through her difficulties with art. On that note, I'll leave with a quote :

"The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves. " Carl Jung

Thanks for reading!
